John & Mydung: 2nd Saturday and VolunThursday
For the August Volunteer Spotlight, we’d like to highlight John and Mydung. They came out to almost every 2nd Saturday and VolunThursday event over this past year and marked over 150 storm drains across Mecklenburg County! In every season, John and Mydung have shown up for our waterways. Thank you both so much for your dedication and hard work!

Storm Drain Marking Competition: World Water Edition!

Join us for our World Water Week Storm Drain Marking Competition from Aug. 22–30. Groups from across Mecklenburg County will compete to help us reach our goal of marking every storm drain in the county! For each storm drain marked, teams will earn one point, with prizes awarded to the top teams in each age division (under 18 and over 18). Additional points can be awarded for marking drains in specific locations! Teams can include up to four people and every member of a winning team will receive an awesome prize like an Owala Water Bottle, hat, or a Stormy plushie! Mark drains, protect creeks and have fun doing it!

Scooping the poop is crucial for maintaining water quality and protecting public health. By picking up after your dog, you're preventing harmful bacteria and excess nutrients from entering our waterways. It's a simple action that contributes significantly to environmental preservation and community well-being! It’s simple and makes a difference.
Remember, stormwater systems are designed to handle rainwater, not waste. Everything that enters these systems can end up in our natural water bodies, where we play, swim and fish. Let's all do our part to keep our environment clean and our water safe by always scooping the poop. For more information, visit our Scoop the Poop webpage.

Many of us are out enjoying our lakes around the county and it’s important to know that the waters are safe for contact. Orange water could indicate excess sediment, gray water could indicate sewage contamination, and green water could indicate a harmful algal bloom. If you come across any discolored water, please report it to 311. Always remember to wait 72 hours after a rain event to engage in water recreation in our coves. If you would like to be notified of any swim advisories in our area, text MECKNOSWIM to 888-777 to get them sent straight to your phone. We will also be posting updates all summer long on our social media pages (@StormWaterCM).
