The over population of free-roaming cats is a human-caused problem which affects the health and well being of cats and our native wildlife.
Whether owned, stray, or ferel, cats are domestic amimals and are not native to North America. Outdoor cats, even well fed ones, kill hundreds of millions of wild birds and other animals each year in the US, including endangered species. The many mourning doves in our community are especially vunerable because they are ground feeding birds.
Free-roaming cats are in constant danger from being hit by cars, contracting diseases and parasites, or being attacked by other animals or people. Cats can transmit diseases to humans such as rabies, toxoplasmoosis, and cat scratch fever. In the US cats are the top carrier of rabies in domestic animals.
My goal is to make Rosemont safe for cats and birds. I encourage you to keep your cats indoors, train them to go outside on a harness and leash, or build outdoor cat enclosures. Cats should be spayed or neutered before they can produce an unwanted litter.
I have lost count of the times that cats have urinated on my front door.
I have also lost track of the times I have seen cats stalking birds feeding in my back yard.
I feel I have no choice but to trap the uncontrolled cats that appear in my yard and deliver them to animal
control.
