50TH Street Redesign News

On January 20, City Council member Barret Lane, County Commissioner Gail Dorfman, and city and county Public Works staff met to review the Fulton-Lynnhurst proposal to redesign West 50th Street. They agreed that the project should go forward and directed staff to study the details and develop a timeline to implement the project over the next few years.
By May, the city and county recommendations will be presented to the Fulton and Lynnhurst NRP groups and then submitted for inclusion in the county?’s capital improvements plan.

On February 2, business owners at 50th & Xerxes met with Council member Lane?’s aide Julia Blount, John Hotvet of Public Works, and Fulton NRP reps to discuss the proposed street lighting improvements for the district. Participants unanimously supported the plan. The project will also include the installation of lights along the Fulton School block of 50th Street between Vincent and Washburn. Public works will draw up an assessment plan and seek the approval of the property owners in the district. Fulton NRP has agreed to contribute $66,000 to the project, with commercial property owners to be assessed for an additional $14,000. Construction of the project will likely occur in 2001 and will be coordinated with similar lighting projects at Penn and Bryant. The meeting for the 50th & Penn project is set for March 1.
