Road Update

Apr 16, 2001

The road renovation has been set back by the recent rains. As many of you know, this was quite unexpected that so much rain would turn our street into a river of mud. East Fremont Place is littered with stuck vehicles.

Ironically, the AAA got stuck when it came to tow out several residents. Eventually it took three trucks to extricate the truck from our mud.

To avoid getting stuck, do not attempt to drive your cars on the East street for the next few weeks, especially if it rains.

Loc Waters?’ construction crews generously come in over the weekend and re-built our plywood bridges. Please help us make sure they stay where everyone can use them. Do not move them as they are the only means of crossing the streets for all residents. If you decide to purchase plywood and place it in your driveway, please spray paint your house number on it. Keep in mind, ramps and bridges are subject to removal by the crews working on the street.

Next Steps!
PLEASE DO NOT WATER THE GRASS PARKWAY! We need your help to make sure no additional water runs into the road bed, especially the areas near the curbs. We cannot pour concrete curbs and gutters if this area is even slightly wet. If you must water your grass between the curb and the sidewalk, please do it by hand and just enough to keep the grass from turning brown.

Even residents who live on the West street are asked to reduce the amount of time spent watering lawns as your runoff makes it
way to the East street since the elevation is lower.

If you need help adjusting your sprinklers, please call Shar Penfold or Patty Lombard, we will get someone to help you.

Now, we must wait for the road bed to dry. In addition, the board is considering a recommendation by soil engineers that we add lime to create a hard surface with the first few inches of soils. This will act as a bridge over the clay soil that composes our street. This clay is very problematic because it retains water. In addition to allowing us to complete the project, the lime treatment will also protect the integrity of the road over the longer term by keeping out the water.

Right now the soil is too saturated for us to proceed. Any new street would be immediately compromised. The board is carefully considering the few options we have to move ahead. The lime treatment is in excess of our budget and we are committed to not asking for additional funds for this project. As a result, we are likely to have to dip into our surplus to pay for this. We want to make sure we are doing so appropriately and prudently. We will keep you posted on what happens next.

You should know that Loc Waters has provided invaluable assistance in moving the project ahead, getting additional information from engineers and other contractors, and providing on site day to day management to avoid any delays. We appreciate your patience. We are all being inconvenienced and we are doing our best to complete this project as soon as possible.

Please help us by not watering the lawns any more than is absolutely necessary.
