About our association

Our neighborhood is one of the best places to live in Tampa! We have a diverse group of residents with different cultural backgrounds and interests. I believe that we all have at least one common interest and that interest is to preserve the integrity and the quality of life in our neighborhood for all of our residents. Our Association was organized in 1991 by founding members: Jim Beeler, Scott Knapp, Steve Weston, and several other helpful volunteers. The neighborhood association was able to accomplish various improvements and had good communications with City Representatives. However, due to different circumstances, the association went dormant around 1995 but still stayed in touch with the City in regards to issues affecting the neighborhood through Steve Weston, then acting president. In early 1997, after speaking with several neighborhood residents, and discussing ideas, Steve set up a general meeting for the entire neighborhood to discuss reorganizing and electing new officers as well as appointing block leaders and start a membership drive.

With the help of his family and a few friends, Steve and his team put flyers on every door in the neighborhood of over 800 homes. The meeting was begun with several introductions and thanks to all those who helped make it possible as well as those who attended.

Steve informed the residents that this association was to be different from any other and that its purpose was not to restrict anyone from painting their homes certain colors or where to put a fence but rather this association was established to help preserve the integrity and quality of life for all its residents by working together to acheive its goals.

Steve proposed various programs that could be implemented such as helping our senior residents with maintenance around the house, a Yard of the Month program to encourage neighborhood pride, neighborhood picnics, and several other ideas as well. That meeting was a tremendous success for the entire neighborhood. We had the biggest attendance for a meeting ever and the amount of interest and list of volunteers was almost overwhelming. It was refreshing for us to have so much interest and participation from our residents.

With the help of the City and other volunteers throughout the neighborhood, we have been able to accomplish many positive improvements. The list of things to do is still long, but this neighborhood is on the right track and plans to acheive many great things.

We were able to establish a very effective Neighborhood Watch program due to the persistent and endless efforts of coordinator Marilyn Durst who has become a tremendous asset to this community in both crime issues and civic issues and is a driving force to this organization's success. We are very fortunate to have people like Marilyn and there are many others also, but rather than risk forgetting someone, we would like to say thanks to all of you for your time and continuous help in making the FairOaks/Manhattan Manor Neighborhood Association one of the best places to live in the City of Tampa. We look forward to many great things to come!!!!!
