We received a grant of $1,000 to open and operate an artistsÂ’ coop in the downto

Posted in: AuSable Artisan Village

This is Terry, I am having to do a Reality Check. I am finding myself overwhelmed.

We received a grant of $1,000 to open and operate an artists’ coop in the downtown and have secured Monte Burmiester’s building for that purpose.

However, the pieces are not falling in place and I am hitting a wall as far as my commitments are concerned. Several of the artists that I would like to showcase are booked further in advance than the time we have. Jackie House was able to get two artists committed in July and I have a tentative commitment from a sculpture, but other than the Spring Art Walk we have only have three of the nine shows filled.

Unless six people step up to the plate willing to take one show each to secure an artist/artisan and get volunteers for an opening reception and volunteers to manage the gallery for a week, I am having to consider not accepting the grant and let the project drop. Here’s what I have:

This lady has some great pieces, several different types of techniques used, lives in the U.P. but travels all over, I will send her an email and refer her to this new discussion board. I think it's just a matter of getting the word out there to make this happen!

Another fascinating artist from the Upper Peninsula, an email has been sent referring him to the new discussion board. Please visit his website!

Terry , since the two slots for Aug are already filled do you absolutely need to fill the two in June? I am assuming that all this slots are for exhibitions because I believe you also have a t a separate schedule for workshops.

Why don't you just let the May 29 exhibition run longer?  Because of the work involve in the setting up of exhibitions, most run aleast three weeks.  It seems like the May 29 exhibition runs only for  4 hours. 3-D exhibitions like pottery are a little bit harder to pack especially if exhibition pedestals/tables are part of the installation. Certainly you would not expect that the exhibition hall should be emptied  after 5.00 pm on May 29.

If you let each exhibition run at least for two  weeks then you do not need to have so many exhibitions.  But then you probably can not do this now because I am assuming that you have booked the dates in between for workshops.
