On January 12, 2005, the Waveland Park Neighborhood Association Board of Directors adopted the following resolution:
WHEREAS, the Waveland Park Neighborhood Association recognizes the important role Perkins Academy has in the vitality and quality of life in Waveland Park; and
WHEREAS, the enrollment of students at Perkins has increased from the 230 students at the school when original plans for school improvements were approved to over 350 students today; and
WHEREAS, the number of families with young children who choose to live in Waveland Park for reasons including the traditional K-5 educational opportunities available at a neighborhood school will continue to grow; and
WHEREAS, the latest proposed site plan for Perkins provides only temporary classroom locations for art and music which will be needed to accommodate expanding K-5 classrooms in two years, requiring use of portable classrooms on the grounds to provide space for art and music; and
WHEREAS, the Waveland Park Neighborhood Association has concerns about the impact portable classrooms would have on the appearance of the neighborhood; and
WHEREAS, the cost of including rooms for art and music as part of the current renovation project is less than it will be to build them in the future;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED: The Waveland Park Neighborhood Association encourages Des Moines Public Schools to include adequate space in the renovation of Perkins Academy to meet current and anticipated educational needs of children in the neighborhood, including appropriate learning environments within the school for art and music.
