Curbside Recycling Coming to El Cerrito . . . . But Not This Year The San Diego Department of Waste Management reports that its program of curbside recycling is gradually expanding and will extend to El Cerrito Heights by the end of 2001. Each household will receive from the city a bright blue wheeled bin similar to the bins now used for regular trash pickup. All recyclables will go in together: newspaper; mixed paper; certain types of plastic; and metal and glass food and beverage containers. The Department expects to have all single family homes in the program by October of next year.

City of San Diego Household Hazardous Material Program -- The city of San Diego now operates a new Household Hazardous Waste Transfer Facility to which you may take, by appointment, hazardous wastes from your residence for safe disposal. The facility is located at the entance to the Miramar Landfill on Convoy Street, just north of Highway 52. Some rules you should know: you are limited to 5 gallons or 50 lbs. of waste; gasoline should be transported in a container that can be left behind; bring proof of city residency; certain materials may not be disposed of at this facility. The facility is open Saturdays ONLY 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Call (619) 235-2111 8:00 am to 5:00 pm WEEKDAYS for more information or to make an appointment.

City of San Diego Used Oil Program -- Two collection events are now scheduled: Feb 26, 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. Mira Mesa High School, 10510 Reagan Road at the intersection of Mira Mesa Blvd; and March 13, 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. in Balboa Park at the intersection of Park Blvd. and Presidents Way. Proof of residency is required. You may dispose of auto batteries, oil filters, anti-freeze, and up to 10 gallons of used oil.
