Piles of junk along Schuylkill River Trail

Posted in: Oaks Neighbors

Dear Oaks Mayor:  I am aware that we live in an industrial, commercial and residential area.  Yes I looked around before I bought a house here.  I saw a neighborhood with beautiful old houses that are unique and a nice group a neighbors with mixed backgrounds.  I also understand that ALD brings in tax dollars, I know how that works.  I am not against development. Yes I shop at Target and BJs - and no that does not make me a hypocrite.

I don't care about what has happened in the past.  It is not important.  I'm focused on the issues at hand.  I am looking to the future.  Why can't ALD help to improve this area?  Draw the lines between residential and commercial?  Why can't the township help to improve the safety? Honestly, I think you should think about this and get involved in your community.  There are ways to grow and expand commercial properties, while improving the streets and community. Tell me, what is so wrong with this?

If you'd like to debate this some more, I would gladly sit down with you over a cup of coffee and discuss this futher.

Yes you pretty much are a hypocrite. drive to audubon to shop and giant and home depot since you have such high standards. And ALD has done a lot to improve the community, but maybe not what you would have done to impact what you would have liked. ALD is huge and the cost and time that would be wasted to visually improve all the properties to appease you is ridiculous and a waste. They violate no laws because they don't have nice lawns or fresh paint or flowers outside.

There is no line between residential and commercial in Oaks. You bought a house on a busy public road and all you do is complain. you should have bought at the end of montgomery, or center, or perkiomen avenues on a nice quiet dead end and you chose not to. Again deal with your issues.

I decline your offer to sit down and discuss it over coffee I don't think it would be an enjoyable experience.

Adam, you're definitely provoking a reaction from the ALD camp.  What they don't realize is that the majority of our neighbors agree with you. Most are frustrated and don't believe the Township is willing or capable of doing anything to push back against the lack of quality that seems to be ALD's trademark and the Township's legacy for the Oaks area.  As our numbers continue to grow, we will drive more and more of this conversation into the public space so fewer decisions can be made without scrutiny or accountability.  Don't hold your breath for "Oaksmayor" to agree to discuss in person or actually contribute to solutions.

We're not naive about the hand-in-pocket relationship between ALD and the Township. That's the past.  You'll notice that ONA's focus, and the concerns of the people who live here, is about what happens next.  The Township and it's weak leadership has not always acted in the best interests of the community. We have every intention of contributing to change so that future decisions are more aligned with responsible development and the needs of the community rather than just the developer and those who profit from cronyism.

Gil,

I have no more affilation with ALD than you do. I do not work for them in any way nor do I have their interests in mind. What has the Oaks neighbors accomplished? I joined this site because I live in Oaks Village at the end of one of previously mentions streets and thought it might be constructive but all it does is bash the local businesses and complain. What solutions to any of the problems posed have you solved? I haven't seen any.

And don't speak for the people of Oaks you don't have that right. I know that neither you nor Adam has been here for even a decade combined.

If you think the neighborhood needs sidewalks then you should incorporate the Oaks Neighbors raise funds and purchase them. You would then be able to do as you please. The same if Adam would like to have a bus shelter for his new friend. If there are enough people that really would prefer to walk to target and lowes over drive, (I personally drive) then again raise funds build a skywalk over station avenue, negotiate a lease with ALD and you would safely be able to walk to to get a hot dog.

Who appointed you to speak for everyone and decide what is responsible development? what are your qualifications? I for one don't blame ALD for my problems like some people and I would not have moved next to a bar if I didn't want to hear a late night business.  I have been here a long time and I like the fact that I can walk in the village have a couple beers and a burger and fries at the Perky and walk back without worrying about a DUI charge.

And the properties that Adam keeps complaining about represent about 5% of what ALD owns. 95% of everything they have is in tip top shape because it has been developed already. And I'm thankful I can shortcut down station avenue to get to pawlings road rather than drive to audubon first. I also enjoy going to an occasional expo event. My children love the dog show and I like the home show. If ALD wanted to they could gate Station Avenue and have a security guard posted 24/7 and nobody could go down it.

I will offer this, if you have a problem approach it directly.  The faceless bashing of the neighbors the association doesn't approve of is childish. Has anyone ever gone to ALD and asked them to contribute to anything? They have more availability to resources than you or even the township. What about the Perky? Has anyone every approached them and asked anything of them to contribute or tried to negotiate any concerns directly?

I'm getting cut short but if you think the path your choosing to go down is accomplishing what you want please continue. I think you will be taking the long road. Keep blaming the neighboring businesses for your problems and add Rapid Recycle, and Global Packaging, and everyone else.
