Robbery Prevention

Recently, there have been three Street Robberies in our service area.  The suspects appeared to have followed victims home and robbed them at gunpoint in their driveway or garage.  The suspects are described as two black males, approximately 20 years of age, 5’10”, slim, and they cover their faces with bandanas or ski masks.

Remember, robbery can be a well planned and executed operation or a crime of opportunity.  Either way, victims can suffer emotionally and sometimes physically.  The crime of robbery is a threat to the safety of our community, however; there are precautions you can take to prevent or reduce your chances of victimization from a potential robbery.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office has created this flier of information to help alert you to possible signs of danger and to minimize your chances of becoming the victim of a robbery.

  • Check the front and rear seats before getting in your car.  Keep all doors locked and windows rolled up far enough that an arm cannot reach through the opening.
  • If you think you’re being followed, don't head home. Go to a police station, fire station, or other open business to get help.
  • When you arrive at home be alert and aware of your surroundings.  Trust your instincts.
  • Good lighting around your residence can be an excellent deterrent.
  • If you park in your garage, close the garage door while you are still in your vehicle and maintain visual surveillance until your garage door closes.  Keep the pass through door from your garage to your residence locked.

In the event of a robbery…

  • Give the suspect your purse or wallet.  Do not risk personal injury.
  • Make a mental note of the robber's appearance, i.e. height, weight, hair color/style, clothing and call 911 immediately.
  • If possible, take down the vehicle license plate number, a description of the vehicle, or the direction the robber is fleeing.

The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office is committed to the safety and well being of our Community.  Remember, appearing confident and alert, often times causes suspects to avoid targeting you in particular.  Being proactive is always better than reactive. You can prepare yourself for a crisis by thinking and planning ahead. This can save you crucial time and increase your chances for success.  For more information, contact Crime Prevention Deputy Amir Stephen at 720-874-3752 or e-mail at astephen@co.arapahoe.co.us.
