  • Respect-O-Meter: Valued Neighbor

CryWe seem to have an inordinate number of lost dogs in Eagle Lake Estates, Oklahoma City.  Two little labs showed up at my door today, and I walked them back up the street to where I thought they lived (they did not live where I took them).  I had some errands to run, and when I returned, they came to greet me again.  They had returned and were waiting on the front porch.  I posted signs and got a call from someone who had been tending to these dogs for a while.  The dogs actually belong to someone in the neighborhood, but I would have to contact another woman who watched them for a while after they escaped their yard.   The owners did show up one time, never said thanks, could have cared less.  I have not heard from the owners.  I will be taking these precious babies to the OKC Animal Shelter, where I hope they will be adopted or rescued by one of the non-kill agencies.  It is evident these dogs are sisters, they are sweet tempered, well-mannered, cute little dogs. There's no doubt these would make wonderful pets for a family with children.

I already have a 115 pound rescue dog, so don't need another dog.  In my younger days I could manage 5-6 pets, but no longer.  I have a couple of responsible owner comments to make:  1.  pet proof your yards.  2.  Provide them with plenty of cool shade, and a ton of water.  3.  Bring them inside in temps over 90 and under 40.  3.  Put tags on your dogs with a contact phone number.  Give your pets a reason to stay home.

Although these dogs have collars, there are no tags.  The owners of these dogs are breaking my heart, as I will have to take them to the shelter.  I'd like to make it mandatory in Eagle Lake that owners have to register their pets, with a photo, name and phone number.

Just about any dog will get out at least once.  You never can tell.  Mine just flipped the gate one day when the lock was off.  If it happens repeatedly, you are the one who needs to correct your behavior.
