RECREATION PROPOSAL

Goal 1: Establish and improve the recreational opportunities for all residents of East Calhoun.
Objective 1: Create recreation activities for children and their families in East Calhoun.
Strategy1: Create a neighborhood playground/tot-lot at East Calhoun parkway, with the location subject to ECCO Board approval..
Strategy Description:
Use recommendations from the Thorbeck, Architects playground/tot-lot/community center “feasibility study” to determine design and location of playground/tot-lot.
Coordinate with the Park Board on the design, construction and on-going maintenance issues related to a playground.

Objective 2: Improve the usability of East Lake Calhoun for neighborhood recreational opportunities.
Strategy 1: Make crossing East Calhoun Parkway more accessible for pedestrians, bicyclists and
in-line skaters by creating and improving pedestrian right-of-ways.
Strategy Description:
Use recommendations from the SRF Traffic Study and Thorbeck, Architects playground/tot-lot study.
Install a speed hump, flashers and/or signs by stairs and pathways at the Zen Center, 33rd Street Crossing and/or other dangerous crossings.
Increase signs at stairs, pathways and other junctions along East Calhoun Parkway.
Coordinate with the Park Board and Public Works on appropriate locations for signs, flashers and/or speed hump.
