From the desk of Courtney Derrick, Montclaire Elementary School Principal:

Highlights:
  • School letter grades are based on 80% proficiency and 20% growth.  75% of Montclaire’s students are certified English Language Learners, which means they are not yet proficient in the English language.  Our goal is always to exceed growth.
  • End of year data from 2022-2023:
    • 30.3% of students showed grade level proficiency (levels 3, 4, or 5 on End of Grade testing)
    • 19.6% of students showed college and career readiness (levels 4 or 5 on End of Grade testing)
    • We exceeded growth and moved off of the state’s low performing list
  • The Insight Survey is an anonymous survey completed by staff members.  Since Fall of 2022 we have been in the 90th percentile and above the CMS average in many categories, including Peer Culture, Learning Environment, Leadership, and Professional Development
  • Zero teachers have elected to transfer schools in the past three years!

Opportunities to Support:
  • Outdoor Classroom/Garden Maintenance & Watering
  • 5th Grade Field Trips
    • We have two trips coming up and families are having a hard time paying because they are more expensive than normal.
    • Charlotte Speedway, March 8th, $31 per student ($2,204 total)
    • Knights Stadium, May 1st, $31 per student ($2,200 total)
  • Amazon Wishlists
  • Teacher Appreciation
    • Bags of candy for Wednesday staff meetings
    • Friday donuts & coffee
    • Staff lunch or snacks
  • Augustine Literacy Project & Heart Math Tutoring
    • These are two options to come in and tutor students weekly.  Both programs are researched based and have a very specific curriculum to follow, no prior teaching experience is required.  We have professionals come in every day before they go to work or on their lunch break to do their 20-30 minute sessions with kiddos!

For any families with soon-to-be kindergarteners, please email me if you’d like to come take a walk!  My biggest wish is for people to see our sweet school themselves, and not solely rely on our grade or scores on paper.  Our staff and student culture are so strong and I am happy to show anyone around!
