State Fair Speedway Noise Mitigation Meeting Held

Jun 17, 2003

On Tuesday, November 5th, the Neighborhood Coalition for State Fair Speedway Noise Mitigation held a meeting at Crestwood Baptist Church. This meeting was held to discuss neighborhoods concerns on lowering the noise from the State Fair Speedway race track. Seven neighborhood associations were represented. Miller Neighborhood has led the meetings over the last two months. Neighborhoods present were Denniston Park, Miller, Musgrave/Pennington, Reed Park, Venice, Crestwood and Metro Park representing 5,485 homes and businesses.
Lanny Edwards, owner of Edwards Racing Enterprises was surprised that the neighborhoods had complaints. He was also amazed of the attendance and representation at the meeting. Mr. Edwards said he understood neighborhood concerns of the noise level and the fact that races sometimes run after their last start time of 10:30 pm. He promised the group that he would check the noise level this Spring to bring it into compliance with Oklahoma City Ordinances on noise levels and would require the racers to install additional mufflers on all races he promotes. He said he would talk to the
other promoters including the World of Outlaws, Motorcycle Races, special races at the State Fair and the Monster Trucks who schedule events at the fairgrounds, about coming into compliance of Oklahoma City?’s Sound Ordinance.
State Fair Assistant General Manager Bill Allen also attended the meeting and was not aware of the concerns of the neighbors. He stated that it would not be a hard thing to do to get the racers to come into compliance. He stated that no races were to start after 10:30 pm, but did admit that sometimes they do with the World of Outlaws Sprint car races. Mr. Allen stated that he would see if the race promoters would schedule the races to have the quieter cars racing later in the evening to help reduce noise later in the evening.
If you are interested in reading the Sound Ordinance for Oklahoma City, log on to www.okc-cityhall.org, go to the municipal codes and do a search for sound. The ordinance is ?“Section 34: Noise?” in the ordinances.
