Show your support for first responders

Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey is encouraging North Carolinians to show appreciation for the state’s first responders — the firefighters, EMS personnel, and law enforcement officers who risk their lives daily to protect others. Their work not only keeps communities safe but also strengthens public confidence and helps reduce losses that affect insurance rates.

Causey says even small gestures can make a big impact. Whether it’s a simple thank you, a handwritten note, providing a meal or making a donation to a local department, every act of gratitude boosts morale. He also encourages those who can to volunteer or support local fundraisers, reminding us that first responders deserve our thanks for their continued dedication and sacrifice.

Health insurance fraud makes premiums more expensive

Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey warns that insurance fraud isn’t a victimless crime — it costs Americans more than $308 billion each year and adds about 20% to everyone’s premiums. Health insurance fraud alone accounts for over $100 billion annually through false claims, inflated billing and other deceptive practices.

Causey urges consumers to stay alert, review their Explanation of Benefits statements, and report any questionable charges to the N.C. Department of Insurance at 855-408-1212.

Check your options and protect yourself during Medicare's open enrollment period

Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey reminds North Carolinians that Medicare’s annual Open Enrollment Period runs from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7, giving beneficiaries a chance to review their 2025 coverage and make changes for 2026. Even if you’re satisfied with your current plan, new options could offer better coverage or lower costs. The Department of Insurance’s Seniors’ Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP) provides free, unbiased help comparing plans and finding potential savings. Read more...

Causey also cautions seniors to stay alert for Medicare scams and misleading marketing during open enrollment. Never share personal or financial information until you’ve verified the agent or company, and be skeptical of “limited-time offers” or promises of “free” plans. For safe, reliable guidance, visit www.ncshiip.com or call 855-408-1212 to speak with a SHIIP counselor in your county. Read more...
