New Kids On The Block: A Renovation Story

May 02, 2005

It?’s a good thing that Kelly Petrusawich and Justin Wilson are young and energetic because the home they bought last May in the 2700 block of Northwest 19th has required a great deal of TLC and hard labor.
Some modifications were needed for aesthetic purposes, such as replacing the ?“Pepto-Bismal Pink?” paint in the master bedroom, but there was also structural work to be done. The sagging ceiling in the dining room had to be completely replaced. Justin had to re-brace the ceiling and install ferring strips over which he hung new sheetrock. He then textured and painted the ceiling. The work on the dining room ceiling is beautifully flawless and the quality of craftsmanship belies Justin?’s young age of 20.
Both Kelly and Justin have artistic talent and this is evident in some of the colors they have chosen for their home. The previously mentioned ?“Pepto-Bismal pink?” bedroom is now Spanish Oak Olive, a rich green color that compliments the 200 year old wrought iron bed that is the centerpiece of the room.
Of course, not all projects go according to plan. A spare bedroom/office was painted a deep red, then glazed with dark grey. The result is a finish that?’s much darker than Kelly anticipated, however reaction from friends and family has been mixed. While Kelly wanted a lighter finish, other s appreciate the ?‘leather-like?’ feel of the dark finish.
