BBW - WOW

BBW, that was a great answer. I've only dealt with the 'checks and balances' concept in a work environment and was making some wrong assumptions about how that would work in a governmental structure. I truely appreciate the answer. Thanks !!!

Now I've got to ask a question - and I understand that you may choose not to respond (in the intrest of maintaining your anonymity). You obviously have a lot of background and/or interest in the democratic structure and processes. Did you study this stuff in college or do you just have a great reference library? (an attourney, maybe?)

Also - Can I just go to Barnes and Nobel (or wherever) and find books on these things - things like the general concepts, philosophies, etc?

And I suppose you don't think citizens should vote, either, huh - hate it when all those ignorant citizens speak out like that.

I have no intention of governing anyone. I would not presume to be competent at that. I am not running for political office. I do, however, intend to exercise my constitutional rights as a citizen and as I see fit.

If you haven't been following the board, we are gathering signatures on petitions to get an initiative put on the ballot in Nov 2000. It will take 62,595 valid signatures in less than 6 months time to do that.

There's no way any one of us will force anything on you or anyone else. The most extreme thing that could happen is that we get those signatures and then the state will vote on the issue (sorry, but that will be those ignorant citizens voting). And if a whole lot of people don't agree with us, it will never make it to the ballot anyway.

So cool your jets, buddy. We are not out to take over the world and rule it with our ignorance.

public mtgs

My take on the reason public meetings should have been held was because public funds were being spent for the campaign.

CVELG on the other hand is not spending anyones money (to promote our goals) without their approval.

Let's take a look at your comments. First, you say the Broomfield effort was led by Broomfield's elected officials. Some of them most certainly were involved. As has been discussed before on this page, elected officials do not lose their rights as citizens. What's the difference between what these citizens did and what you are doing? You comment that the time for debate is just before the November 2000 election. Following this thinking, the time for debate on the city and county amendment would have been just before the November 1999 election. This is okay for CVELG, but was not okay for Broomfield citizens. You are attempting to apply a double standard.
In this day and age, I commend elected officials who are willing to stand up for what they believe and to show real leadership. This is what Broomfield's officials did acting as citizens. They were highly visible. Contrary to what you may have heard, they talked with many Broomfield citizens, service clubs, and community organizations. They did this as citizens which is their right. You are being presumptious to proclaim you know what Broomfield's elected officials did or did not do. You were not there. I was. Br. Anon. has his or her views. That does not necessarily make them factual.
I fail to see how you could reach a conclusion from my prior comments that I do not believe in government of the people, by the people, and for the people. I firmly believe in these principles. They are not inconsistent with the fact that we a representative democracy. Rather, they give life to what a republican form of government is all about.
A Marxist mentality? No way! Don't throw that archaic economic determinism junk my way. I offer a thought for you. The cry of the American revolution was "taxation without representation." As a non-Broomfield resident, you want representation without taxation.
At the statewide election on the city and county of Broomfield, Broomfield voters voted 62% in favor. You can harp about the process all you want. It does not change the fact that the will of the Broomfield people was done at an open election. You are trying to thwart that will. And, you are trying to tell me that you believe in government by the people, of the people, and for the people. Sure.
