To anyone who is asked to sign a petition:

TO HEAR FROM YOU ALL

You have a right to know WHY you should be signing a petition. If it isn't about the jail,
and it isn't about the NW Parkway,
it isn't about the leadership (because they all deserve raises according to BR ANON), and
it isn't about Interlocken (because, duh, no city ever turns down corporate money if it is in their best interest), then WHY?

MANY HAVE ASKED, YOU SHOULD, TOO.

A reason for initiative 199

In answer to your question, Oliver:

The reason seems to be the following - it is a way for citizens to protest UNETHICAL LOCAL GOVERNMENT ACTION and to send a clear message that unethical practices are not acceptable and will not be tolerated, regardless of intent.

Some of the unethical practices which appear to apply to 1998 Referendum C, which creates Broomfield County, are:
1. It was placed on the ballot without local voter approval (or even public hearings) in advance
2. Local government officials lied to state legislative hearings to get this on the ballot by Referendum
3. While acting as "private citizens", local officials made committments on behalf of the City of Broomfield at the legislative hearings
4. With the lack of public discussions and hearings about this issue before it got on the ballot, it seems possible that state Sunshine laws were violated or at least severely stretched
5. Fiscal committments made to support or promote the County might represent violations of Broomfield's City Charter
6. Big contributions to the Referendum C promoters (CBLG) came from groups which are funded by the City (and its taxpayers)
7. Over 95% of the monetary support for Referendum C came from big business and development interests. Did they "buy a county", thus giving them an unfair competitive advantage in dealing with government issues?
8. There were many instances of City action which were very questionable in regard to the Colorado Fair Campaign Practices laws

The above list is probably incomplete. I have a feeling that there are many others. Many of these examples may not be illegal or provably so, but they seem to be very unethical, and THAT is the problem. What do you think?
