Cottages at Argyle Neighborhood Watch

Coordinator's Corner

Oct 08, 2008

Thank you everyone for a great meeting this past Sunday! I think the JSO officers provided some great information. Just to re-cap some of the key points:

* Keep garage doors closed, do not keep valuables visible in your cars, and always make sure to lock your doors. Most theft is a crime of opportunity. If you have an alarm system, arm it.

* Our courtesy officer, Keisha Anderson, has moved out. Vestcor will not be paying for a replacement. It will be up to the Board to budget for security in 2009. We discussed several options for private security guards that were brought up by Property Manager Maggie Martinez.

* As always, be sure to call JSO regarding any and all criminal activity. For emergencies call 911, but for all other complaints (such as noise issues) call the non-emergency line at 630-0500. Please also report complaints (ie. noise, parking, etc.) to Property Manager Maggie Martinez at 288-7781 or mmartinez@jdrcompanies.com.

Finally, I continue to urge everyone to join the Sheriff's Advisory Council (Shadco). Shadco is sponsored by the Sheriff's Office and members meet monthly to get updates from JSO and register complaints with them. There are also speakers at the meetings from various law enforcement and government departments. It is a great way to stay up to date with the goings-on of our area. (And for John Lawrence, I submitted a complaint for about the racing/speeding issue on Argyle Forest Blvd!) The next Shadco Meeting will be on November 3rd (the first Monday of every month) at 7pm at the Lane Wiley Community Center (Get off of I-295 going East on Wilson Blvd, turn left onto Lane Ave at the 2nd traffic light, the first traffic light you come to on Lane is Wiley Rd, turn left and the center is immediately on your left). I will be there and I would love to see some of my neighbors there. Here is a brief update from this past Monday's meeting:

*There will be a joint Shadco Meeting for all of the sectors on November 20th at 6pm at the Police Athletice League on Monument Rd. There will be a bus for the Sector K Shadco members leaving the Cedar Hills substation at about 5pm, you will need to have your name registered at the November 3rd meeting to take the bus. We will still be holding the November 3rd meeting as scheduled.

*There will be a "Walk" this Saturday, October 11th at 10am. (The Shadco members come out in Shadco T-shirts and walk en masse through a neighborhood that has been experiencing problems. This is the third walk of the year and they plan on having more next year.) We will meet at the Dentist office that is about 1 block from San Juan and Jammes. This walk was requested by a Shadco member who was concerned with the rising crime in their neighborhood.

* A member brought up to the JSO officers that Halloween will fall on a Friday this year and they were concerned about increased petty crime and vandalism. The JSO officers suggested giving out candy until 8:30-9:00pm and then turning out exterior lights or otherwise enjoying the night as you saw fit. I was thinking maybe a small group of us could walk around the neighborhood several times towards the end of the trick-or-treat time to discourage any mischief? Let me know!

Thanks, and I look forward to seeing you all around the Neighborhood and at the next meeting on December 7th!
