The Corpus Christi Barrios Association (CCBA) is proud to announce various civic-minded individuals and/or groups that have demonstrated the knowledge, skills, and actions to improve their neighborhood and city. These persons and/or groups will receive the CCBA’s Neighborhood Empowerment Winner (NEW) Awards. At the Saturday, September 4, 2004 meeting, the CCBA unanimously voted to recognize the Moody Civic Minded Students, the Leopard Street Corridor Association, and Roland Garza and Priscilla Leal.

The CCBA would like to acknowledge the Moody Civic Minded Students accomplishments over the last 4 years to improve neighborhoods and Corpus Christi. These accomplishments include:
· Moody Community Conventions in 2000, 2002, and this year’s upcoming 2004 Convention
· Interdependence Summit in December of 2000
· Community Development Block Grant advocacy and lobbying for the Sunnybrook and Manshiem areas in the Fall of 2000 and the Spring of 2001 ($35,000 in preliminary street, drainage, sewer, rolled or no sidewalks, curbs, and gutters).
· CDBG advocacy and lobbying for continued Sunnybrook and Manshiem improvements (over $900,000 in 2002, $87,000 in 2003, and over $3,000,000 in 2004 for drainage improvements from the 1% utilities increase.

· The Moody Academy Awards and Involvement Fair are held in the Fall of 2003 and the Involvement Walk Festivities down Leopard Street and on the steps of City Hall take place in March 2004.

The Leopard Street Corridor Association for empowering and leading that area of the city to combat crime related activities in cooperation with local law enforcement agencies. The association had a very successful National Neighbors Night Out with over 500 attending this event at their Saxet Hall headquarters. They were strong and successful advocates for the demolition of the crime infested Tally Ho Motel. Construction of the new Oak Park Elementary School on Leopard and demolition of the Tally Ho Motel via CCISD property purchase will create new educational, recreational, and economic opportunities. Possible affordable housing condominiums, a new Boys and Girls Club, and new businesses are some of the goals and objectives of this deserving Neighborhood Empowerment Winner.

In the Summer of 2003, Roland Garza and Priscilla Leal empowered and led the Sunnybrook and Manshiem neighborhood residents to call for a Town Hall meeting at South Park Middle School with City Council members and staff to address various issues and concerns. Over 200 community members attended and many spoke to the street, drainage, sewage, and no sidewalks problems in this neighborhood. Mr. Garza and Mrs. Leal have spent many hours researching past and existing concerns, videotaping safety and unsanitary conditions related to the street, sewage back-up, rolled up or no sidewalks, and drainage inadequacies. The CCBA proudly would like to thank and congratulate Roland and Priscilla for their Neighborhood Empowerment Winner efforts.
