Retail vs Restaurant/Bar Alcohol

Posted in: Castleberry Hill
I would feel more comfortable if our zoning recommendations were more explicit in making a distinction between retail and restaurant/bar liquor licenses. I understand the need to keep more ghetto-style liquor stores from popping up, so I accept the need for a moratorium on new retail liquor licenses, and the Steering Comittee Findings explicitly state this recommendation. However, should we be just as explicit about saying that we want restaurant and bar/tavern establishments to be able to get full liquor licenses.

Perhaps there are those who would like to not have any alcohol sales of any kind in the neighborhood, but I think that would not only be a shame, but would also hamper progress. What restaurant will want to open here if they can't at least sell beer and wine? I think it is essential that there be restaurants here that people will want to come from outside the neighborhood to eat and dring at.

I don't know of anyone suggesting that all new liquor licenses need to be banned. I only bring the issue up hypothetically. My point is that our recommendations should be just as explicit about wanting to allow restaurant/bar beer, wine, and liquor licenses as they are about not wanting new retail licenses to be issued.

Daniel,

I applaud your comments and wish to only clearify that there are two different types of liquor licenses.

1. Retail sales on premises only, such as restraunats, bars, pizzas places, etc.

2. Package store over the counter sales.

The package store is the type that we, of the steering committee, are requesting to reduce at this time only.

I agree that there should be no more Package store over the counter sales but restaurant should be and Jerry states that that is the way the plan reads.

Jerry,

What do you mean by "reduce?" Does that mean eliminate?
