MVP invites you to celebrate the completion of Canal Street on Friday,
March 31. Mayor Tom Barrett will preside over the ribbon cutting
ceremony as Canal Street officially opens to the public, connecting the
east and west ends of the Menomonee Valley from 6th Street to Miller
Park. Please join us at 11:00 a.m. at the intersection of Canal Street
and 32nd Street for the grand opening event.
The Canal Street Project represents an unprecedented example of
intergovernmental and private business cooperation between the City of
Milwaukee, the State of Wisconsin, the Department of Transportation,
the Department of Natural Resources, Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage
District, Menomonee Valley Partners, Inc., C. P. Rail, as well as
numerous other partners. These groups came together to build the
infrastructure necessary for the redevelopment of the Menomonee Valley,
paving the way for the largest industrial redevelopment effort in
Milwaukee?’s history.
In addition to the roadway, the Canal Street project includes
construction of segments of the DNR-managed Hank Aaron State Trail
(which will officially open August 12, 2006), a new modern roundabout,
and an innovative bio-retention facility and storm water lift station
at the intersection of 25th and Canal Street, which will keep
stormwater out of the combined sewer system, improving water quality
while adding greenspace in the Valley. The Canal Street Project will
truly make the Menomonee Valley's development opportunities and
recreational amenities accessible to the entire Milwaukee community.
Canal Street can be accessed from multiple routes, including: 1) the
6th Street bridge; 2) Emmber Lane (13th Street) from the north; 3)
Father James Groppi Unity Bridge (16th Street Viaduct) ramp, from north
and south; 4) 25th Street from the north, with immediate highway
access; 5) 32nd Street from the north; and 6) Miller Park Way from
north and south, with immediate highway access.
