About Us

One of Des Moines oldest neighborhoods, Capitol Park is centrally located, with easy access to the Capitol Complex, Iowa Lutheran Hospital and Downtown businesses.

The area is primarily residential with a variety of housing types and styles.

George Washington Carver Community School, Holy Family Catholic Parochial School and East High School are all within the neighborhood. Amos Hiatt Middle School is just east of E. 14th & E. University Avenue.

A variety of religious denominations are served by six churches in the area.

Recreational opportunities are provided by the tennis and volley ball courts and children's play equipment at Burke Park. The Botanical Center is within the neighborhood boundaries and a portion of the Saylorville-Des Moines River Bike Trail forms the western boundary along the Des Moines river.

A shopping center, restaurants and discount drugstore are all located at the E. 14th and E. University intersection. Commercial offices and businesses can be found along the major traffic corridors of E. University Avenue and E. 14th Street.

There is no industrial zoning within the neighborhood.

Annual neighborhoodwide summer picnic at Burke Park sponsored by the neighborhood association, and a variety of business neighbors of Capitol Park.

We were selected to participate in a city-wide Neighborhood Revitalization Program.

The Capitol Park Neighborhood Association was created in 1992 with the purpose ... "to shape a positive and comfortable community." The members prefer a proactive approach to neighborhood issues and have fully participated in putting their Action Plan forward.
