HOME IMPROVEMENT DISASTERS

May 02, 2000

As our homes become older we are thinking about preserving them, adding more space, or modernizing key areas. Working with contractors can be very stressful but here are some tips to help you be better prepared.
a Check up on the contractors past work:
1. Check with past customers and vendors.
2. Check with the Better Business Bureau:
210-828-9441, www.sanantonio.bbb.org/
3. Check with the City of San Antonio Inspection Department, 207-8220,
www.sabuilders.com/sabuilders/remodel.htm
4. Check with the Texas Attorney General's Office: 1-800-621-0508, www.oag.state.tx.us/consumer/consumer.htm
a Have a detailed contract:
Be very specific in the writing on the contract, covering all areas of work to be done such as: start and end dates, warranties, specific materials to be used with descriptions, clean up, and all of the contractor's professional information (name and license number).
