SAFETY IN CAMELOT I

Jan 31, 2001

NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH PATROL
Start the year out by volunteering a little of your time to help keep our neighborhood safe. Thanks to " FASTSIGNS" on Walzem Road for helping with our "Patrolled Area" signs and also our new signs for the vehicles. Try them out!
Thanks, Al and Kay

GRAFFITI PATROL
Our Graffiti Patrol has been out and working hard. If you would like to volunteer your time to or supplies to help improve our neighborhood through the graffiti patrol, or if you see graffiti around Camelot I, contact Beth.

KEEP A LIGHT ON
Help keep the neighborhood lighted by having a light on outside (helps with safety & crime). There are bulbs that you can buy that will last years and use very little energy.

SPEED LIMIT 30 MPH
Just a reminder to residents that the speed LIMIT through Camelot I is 30 MPH or LESS (even on Ray Bon & Midcrown).

TAKING DOWN HOLIDAY LIGHTS DOWN
Just a reminder for residents to take down their Christmas/holiday lights. If left up for a long time, the lights will be exposed to the elements. It may also give the impression that you don't take the time to keep up your home.

NEWS FROM OUR SAFFE OFFICER
Officer Mark Bishop wanted the residents to be aware of two scams that are going on right now. The first one was mentioned in the December newsletter (check fraud). SAPD encourages residents to deliver their outgoing bills to a postal box; not to place their payment/checks for bills and such in their home mail boxes (flags raised). Someone is stealing these checks and changing the information on them. San Antonio residents have lost thousands of dollars this way.
The second scam is dealing with your telephone. There is a company (from outside of the US), that calls with a recording stating that you need to return their call at an 809 area code. They may use the disguise of things such as: "You have won a Prize, call (809)..-?…. to collect this prize. "Your relative has died and left you money, call (809)?…-?…." and other scams such as these. The long distance company from outside the US charges $2,450 per minute. When you call this 809 number you will get another message that will keep you on the line for quite a while. Most callers receive bills for $24,000.00's or more for this. Officer Bishop said not to call any 809 area code numbers or you could be taken in this scam.
Officer Bishop also wanted to let resident to know about free COPs classes (Cellular on Patrol). There will be classes (lasts about 4 hours) offered on March 15th & 22nd. Call the North Substation for more information.

CRIME WAS DOWN THIS QUARTER
Good news. The number of crimes since November went down. Thanks to all the patrollers and residents for keeping us safe.
