May 16, 2002

Veritas Architecture, Interiors, & Design, LLC was selected to conduct the Frankfort Ave. Streetscape, Parking, and Railroad Right-of-Way Study funded by 1st Ward Alderwoman Tina Ward-Pugh and 5th Ward Alderman Steve Magre. The study area is one block north and south of Frankfort Ave. from River Rd. to the former White Castle in St. Matthews.

Eight public forums were held - 3 in Clifton, 3 in Crescent Hill, 1 in Butchertown, and the Frankfort Avenue Business Association. Some of the most commonly voiced ?“Likes?” by residents and businesses owners during the public meetings were: 1) the ?“community?” or ?“neighborhood feel?” and affordability of the area; 2) the social, origin, and economic diversity of its people and type and variety of businesses, 3) the walk-able destinations and continuous stretches of sidewalks, 4) trees, 5) TARC bus transportation, 6) limestone walls and street curbs, 7) the neighborhood's history and tradition, and 8) the corridor has not been overdeveloped ascompared to Bardstown Rd. Some of the most common ?“Dislikes?” mentioned include: 1) trash problems, 2) not enough parking at peak business hours, 3) obstructions and disorder along the sidewalk path (trash cans, newspaper boxes, ash urns, bike racks, mailboxes, signage, etc.), 4) inappropriate street tree selection and needfor tree maintenance, 5) broken and uneven sidewalks in disrepair, 6) businesses not maintaining their property, and 7) too much concrete, and not enough landscaping.
