GARAGE SALE INFORMATION

Bedford residents planning Garage Sales should be aware of the following regulations for conducting and promoting garage sales:

Only USED personal property may be displayed, offered for sale or sold; and only on premises belonging to, or under control of the person offering such personal property for sale. New personal property may not be displayed, offered for sale, or sold for a continuous period of no more than 72 hours. Residents of any single household unit may conduct no more than two garage sale events during a one-year period.

Only signs issued by the City of Bedford may be used. Signs may be displayed 24 hours prior to the actual sale event, and must be removed prior to 8:00pm on the last day of the sale. Placing signs on utility poles, City public rights-of-way or roadway medians is strictly prohibited.

Permits are required and may be obtained from Bedford City Hall, Bldg B, at 2000 Forest Ridge Drive. A permit is required for each INDIVIDUAL garage sale, at the cost of $10.00, at least 48 hours preceding the event. Permits are required for each sales event conducted by NON-PROFIT organizations, at NO CHARGE, at least 14 days preceding the event. Approval of the Police Department is required. Three signs are issued with each permit: one to be displayed on the property of the garage sale and two directional signs that must be located on private property with owner permission. Residents have the option to purchase up to two additional directional signs for $2.00 each.

Permits are required for GROUP garage sale events (five or more households on the same street), at a cost of $10.00 per household, at least 14 business days preceding the event. One sign for each permitted residence and three directional signs for each subdiviion will be issued. Permits are also required for GROUP garage sale events at MULTI-FAMILY HOUSING, at a cost of $10.00 per building location at least 14 business days preceding the event. Approval of the Police Department is required. Three directional signs will be issued for use by management. One sign for each permitted building location will also be issued.
