Sidewalk and Curb Tree Maintenance Information

Jan 25, 2004

SIDEWALKS - MAINTENANCE REQUEST:

It?’s not hard to notice that Brookside Woods has a walking culture. Having sidewalks is one of our neighborhood?’s best features. As our trees mature and sidewalks tilt, we home owners are presented with some maintenance responsibilities. One of the Board?’s goals this year is to make it easier, and less expensive, for our neighbors to accomplish these maintenance tasks.

This April (2003), we will be repairing the sidewalk at the Oakfair/Maplebrook Park. Our civic association owns this land. We will negotiate a discount with the successful contractor for other concrete work performed, at the same time, within Brookside Woods. Those interested in accomplishing these repairs, please call Mark Gresham at 889-2891.

CURB TREES - MAINTENANCE REQUEST:

The trees growing on the city rights-of-ways fall under the jurisdiction of the City of Columbus. It is their responsibility to maintain them, but there are a lot of trees in Columbus. They encourage homeowners to prune lower branches for pedestrian and vehicular traffic. The guidelines for clearances are ?“eight feet over sidewalks and thirteen and one half feet over the street.?” Please measure your trees lowest branches to see if they ?”pass the test.?” I have observed that many of our trees do not meet these clearance standards.

If your tree does not pass the clearance test, please do one of these three things: 1) Prune the lower branches yourself. 2) Call the City Forestry Office at 645-6640 and request pruning service. 3) Call Mark Gresham at 889-2891, I have a chain saw and love to cut wood.
