I received further information on the landfill that I thought would be important for you to know while the expansion decision is being made by the TNRCC. At the present time, the landfill is approximately 20 years old and has had its permits renewed three times. What they want now is a permit to span 57 years. Part of this permit will allow them to increase the height of the dump by 50 feet. It is already the highest point in Eastern Bexar County at 754 feet high. As the dump sits now, it covers approximately 254 acres. Over the next 57 years, they want to increase that to over 900 acres. As you know, the Martinez Environmental Group is fighting this. What they want is (1) no vertical growth, (2) no growth to the south, and (3) regulation 10'' of fresh dirt over all working areas of dump. At the present time they only cover the garbage with tarps that blow away. At the last meeting a gentleman inferred that if we got our way, there would be no place for our garbage. Right now we are the dumping ground for 36 counties in Texas along with some of the border maquiladoras. We are a city. A production of this size belongs well outside a major city. Please respond so we can get some dialogue going about this subject.
