Auburndale Neighborhood Group

IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD - SEPT 2012

Auburndale Neighborhood Association

Meeting Held September 27, 2012

Kenwood Elementary School

The meeting was called to order at
7 :04 p.m. by President Ken Williams.

Refreshments were provided by Stephen Cotton and Ken McFarland.

Kenny Williams announced that David Yates and
Marty Meyer will not be present tonight; they are attending a town hall meeting
on how to recognize a meth lab in neighborhoods.

Treasurer’s report
– Ray Crider reported a bank balance of $71.90, with all bills paid.

Attendance – Joyce
Whalin reported a total of 27 people attending this meeting  (note : Vicki Welch came in from another
meeting just as we were adjourning. (Thanks Vicki for making the effort!).

Kenny Williams announced the receipt of recent
mailing by a local plumbing contractor
to promote the installation of  free
backflow valves by MSD.
  MSD has a
packet of info, with a long list of contractors participating in this program,
with up to $4,000 from MSD available for each household.  Kenny is having this installed on his
property and encouraged others to consider it.

Tony Spratt told the group that there have breakins
on Franelm recently

Stephen Cotton reported on the Mayor starting
a Trees Commission, of which he has been appointed a member.  We have a 27% tree canopy coverage, and the
ideal range is 40%.  We are at the bottom
of the range and hope to improve.  The
major loss we have incurred recently in trees has been due to storms and
disease.

A company called Echo Tech has a contract with
the city to give free 1,000 trees away this year.  Anyone interested in a free tree for their
yard should contact Kenny McFarland, who will bring detailed info next month to
our meeting.  Invasive vines on trees are
being addressed with volunteers helping to remove these vines.

Stephen Cotton then introduced our speaker for
the evening – Steve Bourassa with City Solutions Center at the University of
Louisville

The New Cut and Taylor Blvd. Corridor Study was the topic of his presentation.
He said the area involved is from the Watterson Expressway on Taylor and
New Cut Road to the Outer Loop, with plans to expand it further out to the
Jefferson Forest at some point.  The
interchanges are being targeted for more attractive landscaping.  He reported that most of the parkway (New Cut
Road) is wide enough to create an Olmsted-type Parkway appearance.  Pictures were distributed and a graphic
presentation was shown, outlining plans to make New Cut into a 3 lane roadway
to allow for a bicycle lane.  The name
Jefferson Parkway is being used since the area will eventually end at the
Jefferson Forest.

A median with trees and yellow daffodils is
planned for New Cut Road.  There are
areas designated as the Northern Anchor, Colonial Gardens, and Southern
Anchor.  The community needs to be
involved in seeking support of this plan.
The next steps for approval are that the plan goes to the Planning
Commission, then the Metro Council, and then implementation, which includes
phasing, funding and action.  The idea is
that of being someplace special by creating attractive settings.

Ray Whitener reported on the success of the
Trolley Hop
.  The final date for the
season is on October 20.

Sallye Pence, Kenwood School, reported that the recent Yard Sale/Bake Sale raised a little over
$1,000.  She asked if anyone would be
interested in cleaning/clearing the courtyard located on the backside of the
school.  It is overgrown with weeds and
can’t be used in its current condition.
She told the group that she is taking students to a week-long camp at
Green River.

There being no further business, the meeting
adjourned at 7:55 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Joyce Whalin, Acting Secretary
