Auburndale Neighborhood Group

In The Neighborhood - April 2012

Auburndale Neighborhood Association (ANA) – Health
Fair

Meeting held March 27, 2012
Kenwood Elementary School

This meeting was the first following a January and
February recess of monthly meetings
Following a short business meeting, a Health Fair  was held.

ANA and Kenwood Elementary School
partnered in this event.
Kenwood invited ANA to participate in dinner
in conjunction with their Math and Science Fair and ANA invited Kenwood to take
part in the Health Fair.  This joining of
the two groups was highly successful.
There were 88 people in attendance (followed by an additional 20
faculty,  students and family toward the
end of the fair)!

The short meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m. by ANA
President Kenny Williams.  He welcomed
those health participants present and asked that they introduce themselves and
give a brief description of their services.

Those participants were as follows :
Lions Club – our own Pam McFarland and
Jim
TriAd and KIPDA – Fred
Ocean Dental – Dana Whalin sat in for original representative who was
ill
Metro Parks – Literature available only
YMCA – Ronnie
St. Mary & Elizabeth Hospital –
Karen
Walgreens – Juli and Justin
Girl Scouts – Kathy
SMP – Michelle

Kenny McFarland explained the Girls on the Run program
being sponsored by Kenwood.
He announced the Operation Brightside cleanup day on
Saturday, April 14, at 8:00
a.m.  We hope to have Kenwood students
working with our volunteers.  He also
introduced Sally Pence, Family Resource Coordinator at Kenwood, who welcomed the
group and the opportunity to partner and share in the school activities tonight as well as the health
fair.

Kenny Williams called on the Metro Police Department
Officer Todd Hale, who cautioned everyone to lock their cars and lock/close
garage doors.  Most break-ins are
happening as the result of unlocked property.
There have been break-ins in the Stone Landing area recently.  Our area has been relatively quiet in the
past few weeks.

David Yates, Metro Council Representative, told the group
that he has been working actively on the Landmark Ordinance.  A meeting is scheduled for next week at the
UAW Hall.  David and his assistant, Marty
Meyers, welcomed comments or questions from the group following the
meeting.

Mike Nemes, State Representative, was just returning from
Frankfort and invited the group to ask questions of him about any pending state
legislation after the meeting.

Joyce Whalin informed those present that ANA would be
participating in the Center for Neighborhood’s Grass Roots Gala to be held Friday, June 1 on 4th Street between
Chestnut and Broadway.  There will be
music, food vendors and several neighborhood associations having booths.  All are welcomed to attend.  It will be held from 4-8
p.m.

Kenny Williams reminded the group of the
Donations Jar.

There being no further official business, the Health Fair
opened.

Eye test screenings were done on site, blood
pressure checks, and blood tests for diabetes screening.  All health, fitness and community
informational organizations were thanked for their willingness to join in this
event and for their literature, bags and health items given away.

The food provided by Kenwood was most
enjoyable.

The event was over at almost 9:00 p.m. with all involved
being extremely pleased with the results of the meeting and Health
Fair!

Respectfully submitted,

Joyce Whalin, ANA Board Member
