Headed to the lake or to the beach? Have fun, but play it safe

As temperatures rise and families head to pools, lakes and beaches, water safety becomes increasingly important. Drowning is one of the leading causes of death for young children and can happen quickly and quietly. Parents and caregivers should always supervise children near water, keep phones nearby and learn CPR and basic lifesaving skills. Around pools, use proper fencing, self-latching gates and compliant drain covers. At beaches, pay attention to warning flags and rip currents. Taking simple precautions can help ensure your summer outings remain safe and enjoyable for everyone.

The 2026 hurricane season is upon us; be prepared

Hurricane season runs from June 1 through Nov. 30, and even one storm can cause devastating damage across North Carolina. Storms like Florence, Helene and Chantal showed the importance of preparing before severe weather strikes. Residents should review their insurance coverage, gather important documents, create a home inventory and identify hazards around their property. It’s also important to update emergency kits with food, water, medications, batteries and pet supplies. Preparing ahead of time can help protect lives, reduce property damage and make recovery easier after a storm passes.

Here’s what to put in your ‘go bag’ for disasters

Spring and summer bring a greater risk of severe weather, including tornadoes and hurricanes. One of the best ways to prepare is by having a “go bag” ready in case you need to leave home quickly. Include essentials like cash, medications, water, non-perishable food, important documents, a flashlight, batteries, first-aid supplies, phone chargers and extra clothes. Don’t forget supplies for pets. Many of these items are useful even if you stay home during a storm. Being prepared before disaster strikes can make recovery safer, easier and less stressful for your family.

Fighting insurance fraud is a team effort

At the North Carolina Department of Insurance, we’ve built a strong team to fight insurance fraud, more than tripling the number of special agents since 2017 and partnering with prosecutors and law enforcement agencies statewide. Those efforts recovered more than $20 million this year alone and led to hundreds of arrests and convictions in 2025. But fraud still costs Americans billions each year and raises premiums for everyone. You can help by avoiding fraudulent activity, staying alert to scams and reporting suspected fraud to the Department of Insurance online at ncdoi.gov or by phone. Together, we can protect North Carolinians.
