Milpitas, California?—The Sunnyhills Neighborhood Association (SNA) is lobbying the Milpitas City Council to invest in a light-weight, elevated electric shuttle rather than a second BART station. Now they've erected a full-scale model of a Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) guideway and cab so people can see how well PRT fits into our suburban landscape.
According to SNA treasurer and PRT spokesman Rob Means, the display model offers Bay Area residents the chance to see the scale of this technology in comparison to our built environment. The site selected for the display fits the bill. Located between the entrance to the Cinema Saver Theaters and the fountain in front of the shopping center, the model is surrounded by buildings. ''If people feel comfortable with the guideway and cab in this setting, they'll feel comfortable with real PRT in nearly any public space - above roadways, along creekside trails, even in and through buildings''. Judge for yourself. The full-scale guideway (on 12-foot columns) and PRT cab are on display at the Milpitas Town Center Shopping Center, 577 E. Calaveras Boulevard, from August 2nd through August 16th. Here's a snapshot of the model at the site:
