Alamitos Beach Neighborhood Association

"Communities of Interest" and Redistricing

Posted in: Alamitos Beach

When I purchased by condo here in 2002, the first community group I made contact was the Alamitos Beach Neighborhood Associaiton.   That I have identified with this neighborhood over the years and have supported it speaks volumes to the neighborhood diversity we find here.   But I now question LGBT efforts to create a "community of interest"  voting district out of our neighborhood, as potrayed in the Press-Telegram on page A-11, July 17, 2011 through a "redistricting" plan that would create a voting district that favors the political agenda of the LGBT community over other interests in our neighborhood.   There are currently no LGBT issues that are not currently being addressed in a favorable manner by the City of Long Beach, or the County of Los Angeles.   In an era where we should all value diverstiy, retreating to old formulas that designated voting disctricts out of neighborhoods based upon racial and ethinic profiling serves only the interest of self serving politicians who want to etch in stone conflicts of the past, and reap political rewards for themselves.  "Just Say No" to the LGBT  agenda for political control over our voting rights.
