Once Again Thanks

Mar 30, 2005

On February 26, I attended the Cub Scouts annual Blue and Gold celebration. This year the Cub Scouts celebrated their 75th anniversary, while the Boy Scouts celebrated 95 years. The high point of this annual Cub Scout event is the graduation of the oldest Cub Scouts and their acceptance into the Boy Scouts.
This year in addition to that very special activity, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts recognized Scott Whiteman?’s service as Cub Master for Pack 986 during the past five years. For the next year Scott will assist new Cubmaster DeWayne Griffith, while also taking over as Scoutmaster for Troop 986 ?– the Boy Scouts.
Over these past several years Scott has been a terrific leader for these boys. His skills and passions have enhanced the scouting experience for all the boys in this pack. Where he has seen a need to improve the program he has unselfishly taken on those challenges.
One very impressive improvement has been the building of a pinewood derby track, used each year by the scouts for pinewood derby races. Scott donated most of the materials and with the help of others crafted a track, so impressive other Packs now rent it for their races.
Scott?’s love of woodworking and skilled craftsmanship is evident by the many projects he has been involved in and the traditions he has started in this Pack. Untold hours were spent helping the boys use his woodworking equipment to cut their blocks of pinewood into derby cars. After their first year, Tiger Cubs are presented with wooden boxes to hold their scout treasures. Flag cases are presented to scouts as they move up to Boy Scouts. Scott promises a wooden base for the flag cases for each boy who achieves Eagle Scout. These unique mementos, created by Scott, are treasured by scouts and parents alike.
Scott?’s love for scouting is evident by his organizing and actively participating in many camping trips and day camps. He served as Master of Ceremony at so many scout events it is impossible to recall them all. He has been a cheerleader for scouting in recruiting and guiding the adult leaders for this Pack as well as increasing recruitment of boys. He took over and improved the Cub Scout roll-off and other fundraising events.
He encourages scouts to support our troops and their memory in many ways. One of the most emotional connections he has helped these young scouts make was with the 3rd Armored Cavalry Division at Fort Carson by arranging for scouts and parents to go to Fort Carson to meet with many of the soldiers before they were deployed about two years ago and to reconnect with them on their return. Over the past few years, he involved the boys and parents in a project that sent over 20,000 Christmas cards to the deployed troops. Under Scott?’s leadership, we have seen scouts re-energized during the annual Memorial Day ritual to place flags on the graves of soldiers at Fort Logan Cemetery.
Parents and scouts alike have benefited from his time and energy. Thank you Scott!
