Council Approves Funding Development Plan for Dallas Parks & Rec

Jan 16, 2001

On December 13, the Dallas City Council approved a $1,398,870 professional services contract with Carter and Burgess, Inc., for a Comprehensive Development Plan for the Park and Recreation Department that includes determining direction of "capital expenditures, allocation of operating funds, and recreation programming trends/needs for Dallas citizens over the next decade."

The city will spend $601,300 for a "condition assessment of current park and recreation facilities at over 400 park sites throughout the city" with completion of this part of the contract scheduled for July 2001.

The city will spend $235,000 for "documentation of historic park properties and the development of a Management Information System" for the newly-created facilities database.

The study will include interviews with citizens for input into "current and future leisure recreation needs, including trails, amateur sports venues, skate parks, etc."
Public and private sources fund capital improvements to parks with about $25,000,000 annually.
