MGE has just filed for a rate increase with the Missouri Public Service Commission to increase natural gas prices by 44%! They had the opportunity to fix prices last summer when they were around $4 but instead, chose not to. Now prices are around $10 and MGE expects for the ratepayers to foot the bill. MGE has a monopoly to supply gas to the Kansas City area. And because of that, they have the obligation to protect the ratepayers from shortages and market risks. They have the ability to hedge risks in the gas markets. As residential consumers, we do not. It is their job to deal with risks in the gas markets. Buying gas is what they do. As such, they have failed in their duty and we can't allow them to do this to us. Please write to your City Council person and implore the City to intervene in this potentially devastating decision.
