112th Precinct Community Council

transit district 20 subway stations need cameras

In June we asked MTA for security cameras

In the Spring, there were muggings in our subways and the attacker was finally caught. The precinct council wrote to the MTA requesting cameras in the subway stations in our community.

In July there were the terrorist attacks in the London underground and the cameras helped prevent another attack.

There have been many articles that security cameras were put in stations in Brooklyn and Manhattan.

The MTA wrote back to the precinct council- denying our request.

Councilwoman Katz and Assemblyman Hevesi have agreed to help us.

You can help also. If you want to write to the MTA and let them know your opinion.

MTA WROTE BACK DENYING OUR REQUEST

THE MTA wrote back to the council and denied the request.

Please see the attached draft letter which you can send to the MTA. In the alternative you can draft your own letter.

If you use the subway stations -please join us in writing to the MTA to let them know that we want to be safe.

The MTA has installed cameras in Brooklyn and in Manhattan. We pay the same fare.

draft letter for you to send out

Dear Mr. Lawrence Reuter:

RE: Transit District 20 subway stations: 63rd Drive, 67th Avenue, 71st Avenue, 75th Avenue and Union Turnpike

I am writing in response to your July 28, 2005 letter to the 112th precinct community council. I use the subway stations listed above within Transit District 20 in Queens. I cannot understand why the Metropolitan Transportation Authority has failed to provide these subway stations with cameras like the ones that helped London police identify four suspected suicide bombers. There are constant articles how the MTA has unspent funding to prevent terrorism. Don’t you want to detect the terrorists before an incident happens?
I understand that the MTA has installed security cameras at stations in Manhattan and Brooklyn. I pay the same subway fare, why am I not protected?
Additionally, there were a series of muggings at these stations in the spring. Security cameras would immediately improve the safety of passengers at these stations.

Very truly yours,
