Dedication of the Emma Millican Park – Friday, July 2, 2010

 

The Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs Commissioner George Dusenbury and Councilmember Joyce Sheperd invite you to the dedication of the Emma Millican Park.  Come out and enjoy a cook-out, nature walk, scavenger hunt and other activities on Friday, July 2, 2010 from 6:00pm until 8:00pm.  The park is located at 526 Lynnhaven Avenue S.W., Atlanta, GA 30310.

Look for the Emma Millican Park Sign.  Please walk or park on city streets or in Capitol View Elementary parking lot adjacent to the park.

Remember to wear comfortable walking shoes and clothing!

The Annual Spring Art Show & Sale - April 29-May 29

The Annual Spring Art Show & Sale takes place from April 29-May 29 at the Chastain Arts Center, with a stunning display of artwork created by instructors and students of Chastain Arts Center. Art on the BeltLine Clean up Projects - May 1 and May 2

On Saturday, May 01, 2010 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. volunteers will meet in Gordon White Park (at the intersection of Ralph David Abernathy, Langhorn Street, and White Street; Atlanta, 30310).  Art on the BeltLine needs volunteers to help in clearing and preparing artists' installation sites on the 2.9 miles of Westside trail.  

On Sunday, May 02, 2010 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. volunteers will meet at the intersection of Somerset Terrace and Angier Springs (Atlanta, 30306) and will be divided into teams. Art on the BeltLine needs volunteers to help in clearing and preparing artists' installation sites on the 2.6 miles of Eastside trail!

In addition to clearing artists' specific sites, volunteers will also pick up general trash in preparation of launching temporary public art projects in June and introduce residents and visitors to the newly opened sections of the BeltLine.    For the projects, please bring a reusable water bottle and gloves; tools will be provided.  If you have a group that would like to volunteer for these projects, please email Jenny at volunteerart@beltline.org.

Join Mayor Reed for Senior Citizen’s Day- May 3

 

Mayor Kasim Reed, The Atlanta City Council and The Committee for the Aging presents a Senior Fair 2010 on Monday, May 3, 2010 from 11:00 am – 3:00 p.m. at Atlanta City Hall, 55 Trinity Street, Atlanta, 30303.  Discount signups will be offered for services and programs provided by the city agencies and Fulton County.  Food, and a cartoonist will also be available.

1st Annual South West Atlanta Celebrity Cook Off – May 16, 2010

 

Adamsville Recreation Center will be the hot spot for the 1st Annual South West Atlanta Celebrity Cook Off on Sunday, May 16th from 4:00 – 7:00 pm.  Former NFL player Ed Hartwell and his wife Reality TV star Lisa Wu Hartwell, former NBA player Dikembe Montumbo, and actress Terry Vaughn will participate in the Celebrity showcase and autograph session.  

 

Other festivities include a restaurant row tasting, celebrity cooking stage, sponsor/exhibitors area, The Home Depot/Chick fil-A Kid’s Zone, a jazz band featuring national and local artists, a Relax & Rejuvenate Spa Lounge and much more.  Tickets are $15.00 for adults and $7.00 for kids.  Adamsville Recreation Center is located at 3201 Martin Luther King, Jr., Drive SW, Atlanta, 30331

A Tribute to Former Atlanta City Councilman Jim Maddox

Open Registration for The 2010 Architects & Engineers

- Summer Basketball League

 

Peachtree Hills Recreation Center will host the 2010 Architects and Engineers Summer Basketball League.  The games will be held on Mondays and Wednesdays evenings.  The league fees are $368 per team and the last day for registration is May 27, 2010.  The season will begin on Monday, June 7, 2010.  The Peachtree Hills Recreation Center is located at 308 Peachtree Hills Avenue, SW, Atlanta, 30305.

Open Registration for 2010 Camp Best Friends

 

The City of Atlanta’s Office of Recreation will host the 2010 Camp Best Friends program for over 2,500 children ages 5-17 years old.  Camp Best Friends has been serving families throughout metro Atlanta for over 25 years.  There will be 8 specialty camps, 10 day camps, 2 teen camps and a senior camp for ages 50 years and older.

 

The camp locations are Adams Park , Adamsville, Ben Hill (Day Camp & Teen Camp), Bessie Branham, Dunbar, Grant Park , Grove Park, M.L. King, Peachtree Hills, Pittman Park and Rosel Fann (Day Camp & Teen Camp)

 

The Specialty Camps include Lang Carson (Therapeutics), John A. White (Golf Camp), Lake Allatoona (Residential Camp), Morningside (Track & Field), Washington Natatorium (Swim Camp) and Washington

 

The 2010 summer season starts June 1st through July 23rd, and the extended camp will be available from July 26 – August 6 at 4 locations throughout the City of Atlanta.  Camp Hours are Monday - Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. daily.  There will be no camp Friday, July 2, 2010 in observance of the Independence Day Holiday.  

 Fees:        Atlanta Resident/City of Atlanta Employees:         $30.00 per week/per child
                    Non - Resident:                                                          $90.00 per week/per child
