COUNCILMEMBER BAINUM ANNOUNCES EXCITING COMMUNITY INTERNET PROJECT

HONOLULU, July 24, 2000 - Councilmember Duke Bainum announced today an innovative and exciting community Internet project slated for Honolulu.

Neighborhood Link (www.neighborhoodlink.com) is an Internet-based community network that enables neighborhood associations, non-profit corporations, and community organizations within selected metropolitan areas to create their own free, interactive web sites. The site allows for citizens to have more active participation in their communities by providing a comprehensive place to find neighborhood information and provides organizations the opportunity to publicize their purposes and activities for free.

“Neighborhood Link will enable our citizens to have greater access to their communities, provide a forum for public discussion, and enable non-profits to spread their message to a larger audience. It is a winning investment for the City and County of Honolulu, our neighborhoods, and local businesses,” said Bainum.

Neighborhood Link, a Denver based company, operates and maintains the network including updating it. Launched in 1998, Neighborhood Link becomes fully integrated into communities through partnerships with local governments, neighborhood groups and community organizations, including public schools, libraries, police departments and community newspapers. The company already has sites in 35 U.S. metropolitan areas including Denver, Baltimore, Detroit, Los Angeles and Tampa - and has more than 16,000 neighborhoods online.

“We are very optimistic about the opportunities Neighborhood Link will open for the residents of Honolulu,” said Ted Pinkowitz, President and CEO of Neighborhood Link. “In other cities it has added tremendous dialogue and enabled communities to be more informed and more involved with the issues and decisions that affect them.”

The money that is budgeted is a one- time fee that will pay for the introduction of the network to Honolulu. Once it has been established, Neighborhood Link will find local sponsors for the site to advertise on-line and provide the funds to keep it operational.

The monies for Neighborhood Link introduced by Bainum are currently in the City’s budget, which was approved by the Council on May 24, 2000. The project is pending release of those funds by Mayor Jeremy Harris.
