PLANNING YOUR KITCHEN

''A room for sharing'' describes today's kitchen. Would you have much family time together if you didn't meet in the kitchen? When you entertain, have you noticed how friends follow you into the kitchen, offering to help, hoping to chat.

You may already be thinking of your new kitchen as a second living room - a well furnished space for visiting, cooking, eating, laughing, listening and hugging.

You also know that the kitchen is the most technically complex room in the house, and possibly the most expensive to purchase.Designing a great kitchen and making it work as well as it looks, requires very specialized skills and knowledge.

While there are many designers who ''do'' kitchens,only a limited number hold credential as Certified Kitchen Designer.

CKD: The Mark of Professionalism

Certified Kitchen Designer - CKD - is a certification administered by the National Kitchen & Bath Association (NKBA). It take years of training and expertise to earn those coveted CKD initials.

Requirements go far beyond the demonstration of space planning ability and design talent. A successful design also requires knowledge of building, construction, mechanical and electrical systems.

It requires the ability to write specifications and draw plans that plumbers, electricians and cabinet installers can interpret. It means being familiar with local building codes, safety and environmental regulations - not to mention all thise new products - everything from high-tech appliances to cabinet finishes to custom door knobs.
