Growing up on Pia Street
Aloha! My name is Jeannine Apo Johnson, and I grew up on Pia Street. Many of you may not know my face now, but might recognize a 35 year old picture of me as a 10 year old in pigtails on my skates, skateboard or bike. (Here I am in 1961 with my older sister Malia.)
Niu Valley was the perfect place to live in the 60s. Especially during summer vacations, when my friends and I would pack a lunch in a kerchief tied to a stick and pretend we were running away. We’d go through the backyards of pretty much everybody, checking out the tadpoles in the canal, petting the nice dogs, taking a cool sip of water from a neighbor's garden hose. After getting a snack from the candy store across from the barbershop at the shopping center, we’d play ball or fly kites at the school, say hi to the horses at the stables, and fall asleep in makeshift tents in our backyards.
I love Niu Valley and its people
You opened your doors to me every Halloween and generously bought the candy I was selling for my school or Girl Scout cookies every year. I want so much for my children to have the same idyllic childhood free from worrying about crime. I love this Valley and the people who live here.
