History and Statistics
El Cortez Heights was annexed into the City of Tucson on September 24th, 1938 along with Jefferson Park and Tucson Heights. The total area is 155.7 acres, and it was the 19th annexation into the city. According to Census 2000, our total population is 322. In 1989, after a crime-solving study was present to the US Government, the neighborhood organized to acquire state and federal grant money and approved a special tax assessment for better street lighting, sidewalks, and other public improvements.
Today, El Cortez is part of the Tucson Neighborhood Renewal program which is bringing in grant and bond money for improvements to Mansfield Park, street signs, speed humps, and traffic circles.
