Collection a Resounding Success

Tampa, FL April 28, 2008 - The City of Tampa’s biannual Household Chemical and Electronics Collection (HCEC) last Saturday was a resounding success with almost 700 residents taking advantage of the opportunity to drop off their hazardous waste (paint, pesticides, household cleaners, pool chemicals, oil etc.), and electronics (televisions, VCRs, DVD players, computer monitors, keyboards etc.) for environmentally-safe disposal at no charge.

Participation in these collection events is increasing steadily as more and more citizens realize the huge importance of disposing of toxic substances correctly and keeping them out of the waste stream. Saturday’s event experienced a 40 percent increase in participation as compared to last October’s event, and represents the largest number of people ever to attend one of the City’s collections. In addition, over half of the participants were attending a HCEC event for the first time.

Unwanted household chemicals, automotive fluids and various hazardous chemicals, materials, substances, or products generated or discarded by households can be toxic to the public and pose a threat to the environment if disposed of improperly. As we are faced with an ever-increasing amount of these materials, the City of Tampa and Hillsborough County are taking a proactive role in protecting and preserving the environment and preventing toxic materials from ending up in landfills or contaminating water sources and wastewater treatment plants. Last year, the City collected more than 36 tons of hazardous waste from HCEC participants.

The next City Household Chemical and Electronics Collection will be held on October 25, 2008 at the Solid Waste facility located at 4010 West Spruce Street. For more information, please call Nina Stokes, Recycling Coordinator at (813) 348-6515.
