Shovel Your Sidewalk. It's The Law

Notice From the City of Milwaukee:

Shovel Your Sidewalk. It's The Law

I agree with Mzpiggy, our daughter fell twice on the ice and snowwalking up the hill to the bus last winter, the result of unshoved snow/ice. Once she fell on her face and twisted her ankle. To say the least the result was not pleasant. Here is a notice from the City regarding this, a ticket CAN also be issued to the property owner by the police if it becomes habitual.

Remember that residential and commercial property owners and occupants are required to clear sidewalks abutting their property of snow or ice within 24 hours after a storm. If violations are reported, a 24-hour notice is issued. If the sidewalks still are not cleared, a sanitation crew will clear a path and put the charge on the property tax bill. Note: the city does not plow alleys. Call the city at 286-CITY.

If you have elderly or disabled neighbors who need help with snow shoveling - please help them out when you can. Residents living in single family homes who are physically unable to clear the sidewalk in front of their home may apply to the Department of Public Works sanitation section at 286-8282 for assistance.

And make our city safer by shoveling out the fire hydrants near your home. Ald. Hines says "adopting" a fire hydrant will ensure maximum visibility for firefighters in the event of an emergency.

One major problem with the shoveling is that there at least two foreclosed properties where the owners are not at all moved by tickets or notices. And, it seems, the city needs to be called each time it snows. When they do come, the don't do a good job. one property is on the northeast corner of Mt. Vernon and 38th St.

I will call the city tomorrow on that property and on a couple of others on Park Hill where the young tenants just refuse to apply shovel to walk and then laugh about it if anyone says anything. I called today but since it hadn't been 24 hours yet since the snow stopped the guy wouldn't take the complaint.

Lisa - is there any concerted action you think the alderman might take on getting the foreclosed properties on a regular list??? I hate to be bothering that office constantly, but it seems that's the only way anything gets done...

Great Idea! I will talk to Alderman Murphy and hopefully they could go on a list of some kind. You'd think they would be on some kind of list anyways since they are owned by the City! Their rules regarding enforcing the ordinance should apply to their properties.

I know several people down here are going to try and make a master list of habitual offenders who rarely if ever shovel let alone salt their walks. I've told them however to see if the people not shoveling might be elderly or disabled and maybe somepne from the neighborhood could help or they can be referred to the City or Interfaith  for shoveling help.

I had sent the alderman an email about three properties that aren't in foreclosure that hadn't shoveled from the first snow.  One property located on 38th & Blue Mound was a habitual problem last year.   It was safer walking in the street against traffic with the semi's and vehicles hen on the sidewalk.

I am also concerned about two other areas.  The NW corner of 39th & St Paul.  I know the people who own the adjacent home is not responsible for the corner property.  And the corner SE corner of 41st & Clybourn, I think this is a city lot.   These areas were problems last year too.
