  • Respect-O-Meter: Valued Neighbor

A neighbor (tenants) had a yardsale in October of last year, and since then the unsold merchandise, a significant amount of stuff, has sat in the backyard in heaps and moldy piles.  I recently discovered there are rats in the crawlspace under my house and have a pretty good idea of where they are coming from.  Do I have any resources to get this mess cleaned up?  The landlord knows about the junk, in fact I have seen them all hanging out together amongst it so he apparently thinks it's not a problem.  The fact is it's a gross eyesore that is providing a breeding ground for rats, and I can't even imagine what it will be like when mosquito season rolls around!

Thanks in advance for any information!

Absolutely, we know of resources!! First and foremost, call 311 and report to Code Enforcement. This is a health and sanitation issue which is one of their areas of responsibility. You don't need to say specifically that items are in backyard unless asked. Just say "heaps and piles on the property" and say there are rats and standing water. That will be enough. The 311 operator will give you a complaint number which you may use to follow up. In a few days, this complaint will show up online and we would like to follow it! But, we can't follow up if we don't know the address. Please email that to us at sedgefieldneighbor@hotmail.com. This is a confidential email and the offending property address will not posted here for all to see. Please do this for us. We believe Code Enf really does try to help us here, but they can't know of problems unless someone calls to report them and we follow up!! THANK YOU for bringing this to our attention. - SNA
