In July, the Radcliffeborough Neighborhood Association barely voted in favor of a variance to allow SunTrust Bank to operate on the corner of Vanderhorst and Rutledge. The Charleston BZA used the association's vote to help justify its decision to grant the variance and allow a commercial property on land that has been zoned residential for more than two decades.
The BZA's decision is on appeal to the City Council and the Radcliffeborough Neighborhood Association is revoting on the variance this Thursday, 6 September 2007.
Some of the issues that concern neighbors include lighting, car traffic, and foot traffic. For example, the ATM at the Bank of America on Calhoun (half a block away) gets 300-400 visits a day.
Safety is also a concern as muggings have occured in the MUSC parking deck across Vanderhorst from the proposed location of the ATM/bank.
