Radcliffeborough Neighborhood Association

Monthly Meetings, Committee and Website Creations

May 09, 2006

I. Dan Lesesne, President, opened the meeting with the announcement that the association will meet once a month, that meetings will last one hour, that meetings will move in business-like fashion, and that refreshments will be served at the end of the meeting.
II. Treasury transactions: The association spent $550 on newly planted oak trees located at Coming/Vanderhorst (2), the Frewil apartments area, and 57 Radcliffe. Neighbors will water the new trees.
III. New business: Elliott Dobson has created a website for Radcliffeborough on the Neighborhood Link server. Visit www.neighborhoodlink.com\charleston\rna\
Enter your zipcode. The site includes history of the neighborhood and the association. You can add a page though the site restricts somewhat. It allows the sending of a fax over the net to someone in city government, and it has a crime prevention page. One can place local ads free such as yards sale, job search, lost pet. There are links to city council and mayor?’s office. A forum called ?“Talk About It?” allows you to talk about issues.
Speed breakers have been approved for Radcliffe Street. Bill Stevens says that the city will install two, according to Vice President John Zervos, in 90 days or less. Elliott Dobson gathered the signatures of 75% of the homes on Radcliffe Street.
John Zervos saw Mayor Riley regarding two-way traffic for Coming, Rutledge, and Ashley Avenues. He will talk to the College of Charleston about helping with this goal. A study is apparently set for July for below Calhoun. To add your voice of support for two-way above Calhoun, go to the website and use the link to the mayor and city council to ask that Radcliffeborough be included in the study as well.
Other concerns at the meeting were ?“kiddie kondos?” bought by parents for students to live in. They cause trash problems; Judge Molony (Livability court) has responded to complaints by sending letters to some offenders. A suggestion was made for a trash study., and a call was made for tough enforcement at move-out times. On May 30 the Mayor will hear from Radcliffeborough and Harleston Village to seek concrete solutions to the trash problem in the city.
Lt. Williams of the police department was cited for his success in curbing a drug selling problem on Radcliffe Street.
John Zervos has requested standardized lower wattage for street lamps, as some as close to bedrooms.
Clean city forms were handed out to neighbors who need to give polite reminders to neighbors about trash problems on their property.
Two new committees were formed:
LIVABILITY: John Zervos, Mary L. Free, Julie and David Skinner, Esther Jones, Elliott Dobson, Peggy Levinson, and Barbara Stender.
TWO-WAY TRAFFIC: John Zervos, Rob Mikell, Brian King, Robert Ballard, Katherine Pratt, Al Parker

IV. Old Business: in an update on parking regulations, it was reported that a letter had not yet been sent to Bill Stevens requesting that parking limits be changed to one hour, five days a week, 8 to 8. Dan Lesesne has now sent the letter.

Elliott Dobson volunteered to send a thank you letter to Lt. Williams for his help in crime control on Radcliffe Street. She will send a copy to the Mayor.

Drainage is still a concern for the neighborhood. The city needs to find money to complete projects. The Medical University plan should help with Ogier Street.

Progress is being made on Morris Square at Smith and Morris Street. David Agnew is anticipated to be at the next meeting to discuss the development.

It was stated that the city of Charleston Help Line is responsive. Peggy Levinson gave the number: 724-7311

The next meeting will be May 25 at 6pm at the Cathedral of St. Luke and St. Paul, 126 Coming Street.
