Another idea to reduce traffic

Posted in: Willo
I'm not certain the roundabouts are really going to make a difference to many of us. Sure, traffic will slow down where they are placed but I live in the south village and feel the traffic will still speed up on that long stretch between Encanto and McDowell.

Just a thought but it seems to me that north/south traffic is a problem because our neighborhood is so open that way. Central, 7th Ave, McDowell and Thomas are the major streets that should take the bulk of the traffic around our neighborhood. So, how to close off the village?

One concept I would like propose is that we fill-in 5th and 3rd avenues every 3 blocks or so -- so they don't go through. This fill-in would allow two new homes to be built at each section of road where an avenue is closed between two east/west cross streets.

Adding deversions such as this would discourage north/south through traffic and we could still enter our neighborhood from Central and 7th Ave as we do today.

The city gets more taxable land & a little less road to maintain.

We get a few new neighbors and much less traffic on 5th and 3rd.

Make sense to anyone else?

Bob,

Nice thought, but the city would never buy into it. Fire & Police Protection, Utility easements, traffic flow out of the downtown area are only the immediate reasons they will provide you with.

My sense is the city technical folks will fight you all the way to City Hall.
