M.O. school progress

Posted in: Merry Oaks
Significant improvement! Out of the 89 elementary schools, M.O. showed a high percentage change in reading improvement, actually third among the 89 schools.
Nations Ford 15.1 percent change since 2005
University Park, a 12.1 change
MERRY OAKS, a 9.3 change for the better.
That says a lot about our great teachers and the principal.
The recent statistics showed the percentage of students scoring at or above grade level on 2006 reading exams.

M.O. school grounds

The outdoor classroom has been raked and the benches stained so it can be used for classes now and into spring.
If you walk on the school grounds, please take plastic bag to help pick up bottles and trash. There is a dumpster in the south parking lot. Thanks!
April 14 Hands On

''Hands-On Merry Oaks'' was originated by Cate Martin a few years ago and
since then we have: cleaned and edged Merry Oaks Road, helped a neighbor with some
heavy lifting/pruning, removed invasive species from the Greenway, and planted a
butterfly garden at Merry Oaks School and cleaned and put up birdhouse, etc at the
outdoor classroom as well as picked up trash. This year we are again helping clean
up and plant at the school in conjunction with Park and Recs construction of a walking
trail.
If you would like to donate plants, either bring them to the school April 14,
9:00-11:00 a.m. or they can be left in Cate Martin's driveway near the back
and we'll transport them to the school. Especially needed would be butterfly
and bird attracting plants, such as coneflower, black-eyed susan, small hollies
or similar evergreens, bags of soil or other perennial sun-loving and low maintenance
plants...thrift, candytuft, salvia (hummingbirds), phlox. there are a few shady
area where we can put lenten rose or hosta. If you would prefer to donate time,
wear old clothes and bring your own tools and gloves if you have them. We'd
really like to have another birdhouse and someone with ladder to put it up. We'll
have a cooler with drinks for MONA members.
Teachers have begun applying for National Wildlife Foundation schoolyard habitat
certification for the area and Park and Rec. hopes to participate. The new walking
trail is expected to take about 2-3 months to complete.''
